 | Opaque twist ale glass of Political Significance.
An ale glass of political interest engraved to the rim 'LIBERTY AND WILKES' below which is an open cage and an escaping bird.. The reverse of the glass is engraved NO. 45.
Opaque twist stem and conical foot. c1765.
Wilkes started the radical publication 'The North Briton' in 1762 to attack the Earl of Bute, the then head of government. Wilkes criticised Bute's successor, George Granville, in the issue numbered 45 and was arrested for seditious libel and found guilty in 1764. He fled to France but was imprisoned on his return in 1768. His supporters appeared before King's Bench chanting 'No justice, no peace'. Troops opened fire on the unarmed men killing seven and wounding fifteen.

A bell bowl wine with a solid base containing a circlet of ten tears, raised on a double series opaque twist stem and conical foot. c1765.
Height: 177mm.
Condition: There is a manufacturing mark which has the appearance of a crack but is a short horizontal scratch-like groove to the interior of the bowl. It has very little effect on the quality of the glass.
